MPS or MFA Degree – What’s the Difference?

The Masters of Professional Studies degree is an accredited degree that emphasizes learning real-world skills and professionally relevant material. Due to the one-year schedule, the MPS in Digital Photography program is a very intensive and results oriented program that culminates in a creative and technical thesis project. A Masters of Fine Art degree is a terminal degree that requires 2-3 years to complete and concentrates on theory, research, and critique. An MFA degree also concludes with a thesis project and thesis defense.

Before enrolling into any online degree, please check and make sure that it is accredited as the most fundamental.

The MPS Digital Photography at the School of Visual Arts degree is accredited by NY State and additional federal oversight offices.

First of all a little about my background-I have a BA in Graphic Design & Photography, a MAE in Art Education, own a photography business, and currently teach high school art. I would eventually like to teach either graphic design or digital photography (leaning more towards photography) at a 2 or 4 year college and am looking into what my next steps should be. Now for my question(s), would the MPS be the best route to further my education and would it give me the credentials to teach at a 2 or 4 year college? Or would an MFA be a better route?

To be a tenure track professor most colleges require an MFA degree. Many other schools don’t have that requirement – but it depends on the specific school and the classes being taught. If teaching is your goal then an MFA makes sense in the long-term.

A number of our graduates are teaching at 2, 4, and graduate schools. To teach in a tenure track position an MFA degree is required – but as I mentioned our grads are respected Adjunct Faculty in a variety of schools.
